This was an ebay purchase in 2006 that I planted in the ground. It has grown well, the shape is not great and deer have munched on it, so I keep pruning/shaping. It seems really hardy. In 2011, looks good. Spring color is excellent.
This has been here since 2005 and has proven to be easy and hardy. In 2011, beautiful tree. Has two branches in the center that had to be moved apart with a piece of wood or they would eventually cross. Took off some lower branches.
Purchased in 2007, this has been slow to get established. It seems to be getting stronger each year. I was worried that it might be in too much sun, but the leaves don't seem to look burned so I will leave it where it is. It should be a nice, small maple where I need one. In 2011 seems to be its strongest year yet.
I just got this in 09 and if it keeps the colors it has shown already, it will be fantastic. Has struggled in 2010, deer have eaten, some branches need pruned. In 2011 pruned some branches, had some dieback. Something dug around its base, but seems okay.
I got this in 06 because it was from Turkey, where my husband's family lived, and it supposedly liked hot, dry conditions. I had just the place where nothing would grow. It has grown like a weed. Not a really outstanding looker and I have been constantly pruning it to try to shape it, but it works in the place I planted it.
I was not impressed when I first got this (2007)because it showed no variegation. That winter deer ate it some, but the next spring it had very nice variegation and grew well. It was moved to a better location 09 and made substantial growth. I think it will be a nice addition. In 2011, growing strongly. Pruned it back severely last year and wonder how large it will get (too large?). Has a good foot of growth this year alone.
I bought this a few years ago thinking it was going to be one to put in the ground. Afterwards I noticed it was rated zone 7, so it has been in a pot. David at Davidsan's Japanese Maples is going to try his in the ground, so I'll see how his does. In ground 2011 because it has grown so tall, over 5' in ground.
I have been teaching in an urban middle school for more than 20 years now and still enjoy it, but I love my summers because it's gardening time. I have lived at my current home for almost 22 years and have about 2 acres. Probably one of the acres is garden. It is a pretty shaded area and most of the plants are shade tolerant. We have lost some large red oaks in 2011, and this has added some sun to dark areas and opened up new growing possibilities.
